Training organisations

Contact the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) for details of approved training organisations in your area. You should discuss your specific needs with the organisation so that they can tailor the training. For example, your first aiders may need special additional training to deal with less common risks such as working in confined spaces.

First Aid at Work certificates

If your first aiders are able to demonstrate the required first aid skills, they will be issued with a First Aid at Work certificate.

These certificates are valid for three years. When the certificate expires, the individual must attend a full HSE-approved course of training to requalify as a first aider.

It is recommended that first aiders attend a refresher course up to three months before the expiry date of their certificate. The new certificate will take effect from the date of expiry. It is good practice to keep a record of when your first aiders qualified and when they should receive refresher training.

In the interim, you should encourage first aiders to refresh their skills by reading first aid guides.
